BULAWAYO – PATIENCE and unity have emerged as key themes at Highlanders Football Club, with club legend Alexander Maseko rallying supporters to stand firmly behind head coach Benjani Mwaruwari despite a slow start to the season.

Highlanders remain winless after six matches in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, drawing all their games and sitting 12th on the table.

While some supporters have expressed frustration, Maseko has urged calm, emphasising long-term vision over short-term results.

Speaking after Highlanders’ goalless draw against Scotland FC at Rufaro Stadium lasy week, Maseko said: “Had to watch Bosso vs Scotland in Harare, what a game. I believe the team with all the support we give Benji (Benjani Mwaruwari) and his technical team from all Bosso supporters and former players, we will go far.”

He added: “Today’s game (last Sunday) was superb, nothing wrong with a draw, the boys performed well. The only thing we all need to do is to rally behind the team. All will be well. Ngiyabonga (thank you).”

Maseko’s message highlights a crucial reality in football: stability and backing for a coach are often the foundation of success.

Early-season struggles are not uncommon, particularly when a new coach is implementing fresh tactics, rebuilding squad confidence, or integrating new players.

Consistent support from fans and club leadership allows a coach to refine systems, build cohesion, and ultimately deliver results over time.

Mwaruwari, a former Manchester City striker and Zimbabwe Warriors legend, brings valuable experience and leadership to Highlanders.

His playing pedigree and understanding of the game position him well to guide the team through this transitional phase.

Six draws, while not ideal, also reflect resilience and defensive organization—key building blocks for future victories.

However, the situation also raises broader concerns about governance in football.

The perception that a coach may have been influenced into position by external wealthy individuals—rather than formal club structures—can create divisions within the fanbase and undermine confidence.

When appointments are seen as imposed, it risks eroding trust, destabilising the dressing room, and placing unfair pressure on the coach, regardless of their capability.

For Highlanders, unity remains essential.

Supporters, former players, and executives must align behind the technical team to foster a positive environment.

Football history consistently shows that clubs which remain patient and cohesive during difficult periods are more likely to achieve sustained success.

As the season progresses, Highlanders’ challenge will be to convert draws into wins.

With continued backing and belief in Mwaruwari’s leadership, the club still has every opportunity to rise up the table and fulfill its ambitions.
