Outrage as Joshua Nkomo statue stolen in Bulawayo

BULAWAYO – SHOCK and outrage have gripped Zimbabwe following the theft of a bronze statue of liberation hero Joshua Nkomo from Bulawayo’s central business district.

The monument, located near the historic Post Office along 8th Avenue and Joshua Nkomo Street, was discovered missing early Tuesday morning, prompting a police investigation.

Authorities have cordoned off the site as detectives pursue leads, including images circulating on social media that appear to show the life-sized statue being transported in a white minibus.

The circumstances surrounding the removal of such a prominent national symbol have raised questions about planning, security lapses and possible motives.

Nkomo, affectionately known as “Father Zimbabwe,” was one of the country’s foremost liberation leaders.

As founder of the Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU), he played a central role in the struggle against colonial rule and later served as Vice President after independence.

Widely respected for his commitment to unity and reconciliation, Nkomo remains a towering figure in Zimbabwe’s political history.

The theft has sparked emotional reactions among residents, with many describing the act as both criminal and deeply disrespectful to the nation’s heritage.

For Bulawayo, a city closely associated with Nkomo’s legacy, the incident represents more than the loss of a statue—it is seen as an affront to collective memory and identity.

Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with a specialised team analysing available evidence. Authorities have urged the public to assist with information that could lead to the recovery of the statue.
