{"id":2311,"date":"2026-04-20T14:28:41","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T14:28:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/matabeletoday.com\/?p=2311"},"modified":"2026-04-20T14:30:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T14:30:07","slug":"nkayi-runner-seeks-national-chance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/matabeletoday.com\/?p=2311","title":{"rendered":"Nkayi runner seeks national chance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by <em>BEKEZELA NDEBELE<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>NKAYI \u2013 PROMISING middle-distance runner Siphilisiwe Moyo, an 800 metres athlete from Sagonda Secondary School, is seeking financial support to travel to Harare for the upcoming national team trials.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Moyo, who hails from Nkayi in Matabeleland North, has emerged as one of the province\u2019s standout athletes and is currently ranked among the top performers following the provincial finals.<\/p>\n<p>Her qualification places her in strong contention for selection at the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) trials scheduled for 25\u201326 April.<\/p>\n<p>Athletes selected at the trials will earn the opportunity to represent Zimbabwe at a series of international competitions, including events in Maputo, Mozambique, as well as meets in the United States and Mauritius\u2014exposure that could prove pivotal in launching Moyo\u2019s athletics career.<\/p>\n<p>However, despite her impressive performances on the track, Moyo faces significant financial hurdles that could prevent her from competing at the national level.<\/p>\n<p>She requires funding for travel to Harare, accommodation, and basic preparations ahead of the trials.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, she does not yet have a passport, an essential requirement should she secures international selection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am appealing for assistance to help me pursue my dream,\u201d Moyo said, expressing determination to represent her country on the global stage.<\/p>\n<p>Her situation reflects a broader challenge faced by many young athletes in rural Zimbabwe, where talent often outpaces access to resources.<\/p>\n<p>Without adequate funding, promising competitors risk missing critical opportunities to progress in their sporting careers.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond travel and documentation, Moyo is also in need of proper athletics equipment, including training and competition kit.<\/p>\n<p>Access to suitable gear is vital not only for performance but also for injury prevention and professional preparation at elite levels.<\/p>\n<p>Local sports observers note that investment in athletes like Moyo can yield long-term benefits for Zimbabwean athletics.<\/p>\n<p>Success at youth and junior levels often feeds into national teams, strengthening the country\u2019s presence in regional and international competitions.<\/p>\n<p>Well-wishers, sponsors and members of the public who wish to support Moyo\u2019s journey can contact Mr G.
