Beitbridge road project stalls

CONSTRUCTION work on sections of the Masvingo-Beitbridge highway has stalled after contractors reportedly abandoned some sites over delayed payments, raising fresh concerns about progress on one of Zimbabwe’s most strategically important road projects.

ProStruct Consulting Engineers representative Kudakwashe Dzimati said contractors working on the dualisation project had left some sites, with Masimba Construction reportedly sending workers away on 2 July.

The disclosures were made during a Government inspection of infrastructure projects in Masvingo and Chivi last week.

Dzimati warned that completed work could deteriorate if it is not adequately protected before the rainy season, potentially causing further delays and additional costs.

The Masvingo-Beitbridge highway is a critical transport corridor linking Zimbabwe with South Africa and carrying substantial volumes of passenger and commercial traffic.

Any prolonged disruption to construction therefore has implications beyond the immediate project. Delays can affect travel times, freight movement, logistics costs and regional trade.

The concerns also come as Beitbridge continues to experience heavy activity as a major gateway between Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Despite the setbacks, the Government has repeatedly identified road infrastructure as a key component of its broader development programme and efforts to improve regional connectivity.

For businesses and motorists, the latest developments are likely to renew questions about when the highway upgrade will be completed and whether funding constraints could undermine the project’s objectives.

The stalled work also highlights the importance of consistent project financing, particularly for major infrastructure developments where delays can increase construction costs and reduce economic returns.

With the rainy season approaching, engineers are now warning that urgent action may be needed to protect existing works and prevent further deterioration.

The highway remains essential to Zimbabwe’s trade ambitions, making the resolution of payment and construction challenges increasingly urgent.
