Zimbabwe seeks redress from SA over migrants’ economic loss

HARARE – ZIMBABWE is to engage neighbouring South Africa after some of its nationals suffered economic losses when they left because of anti-migrant tensions.

The Cabinet disclosed this on Tuesday as the repatriation and reintegration of Zimbabwean nationals from South Africa continues.

“Cabinet noted with concern the loss of employment benefits, pensions and unpaid dues for the returnees, which matter will be pursued through bilateral arrangements,” Cabinet stated in its weekly briefing.

Cabinet disclosed a total of 36 940 returnees had been repatriated through government arrangements, while 79 730 had self-repatriated, bringing the total number of returnees to over 115 000.

Additionally, a cumulative total of 870 self-repatriations were recorded through the Botswana entry points, west of Zimbabwe.

A total of 38 057 returnees have registered through the Skills Registration Process, with some local companies expressing interest in utilising the skills data for their employment needs, Cabinet revealed.

Earlier in July, Nigeria reported it would seek compensation from South Africa for its citizens who have left the country following recent protests targeting undocumented migrants.

The protests have triggered a diplomatic fallout between South Africa and some fellow nations.

A number of people have died.
